Michael Smith
Board Vice President (interim)
Michael currently serves as a Strategic Advisor to several firms in Competitive Intelligence/Strategy and is an Executive Coach for Sales. Prior to returning to the private sector, he most recently served at Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University as Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships, having served previously as the Executive Director of The Initiative for Managing Services. In addition, he was Senior Lecturer in Marketing & Logistics in undergraduate, MBA and Executive Education programs.

Under his leadership, new and successful public-private partnerships were established at Ohio State. Among them were: The Nationwide Center for Advanced Customer Insights The Institute for Enterprise Risk Management Fisher Center for Predictive Analytics and Insights The OSU Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship The OSU Real Estate Center Michael launched his career at the Ford Motor Company’s World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan in Finance. Mike then progressed to senior level positions in operations, strategy, sales, and marketing at ABB (Asea Brown Boveri), the global engineering, power and automation Company. This included leadership positions in ABB Process Automation and ABB Robotics, serving as Executive Vice President and General Manger. In 1998, Mike became Executive Vice President of Entek IRD, managing an operational turnaround through marketing, sales, service, and project management for this predictive and condition-based maintenance company (IIoT), which resulted in the successful sale of the firm to Rockwell Automation. Mike’s final private sector role before Ohio State was with Textron, Inc., where he first served as VP/General Manager of InteSys-Textron. He concluded his career at Textron as Director of Customer Service Leadership, leading strategic marketing projects, talent development and training business units that included Bell Helicopter, Cessna Aircraft, Greenlee, E-Z-GO Golf Cars and Kautex Fuel Systems. During that time, he co-developed the Growth Leadership Program at the Fisher College of Business to instruct Textron’s top 1,000 managers in Marketing Fundamentals and Practice. Mike’s areas of expertise focus on Sales Force Excellence, Customer Service and Predictive Analytics. Today Mike is a Strategic Advisor to the Cipher Systems (www.cipher-sys.com) in Competitive Intelligence & Strategy, serving clients such as Sherwin-Williams, Flight Safety, Greif and others. Mike holds an undergraduate degree from Ohio Northern University and an MBA with a concentration in Finance from The University of Detroit. He is pursuing his Ph.D. at Ohio State.
